PLTW JPL Project: The Heavy Lifters
-Once these parts were in place, we finally began the testing stage. After a few "dry attempts" we concluded this: The speed at which the pipe arm moves is too fast, we need a way to slow the arm, and therefore the pipe attached to the arm, without compromising its end destination. We knew we could increase the friction with even more pulleys, find a less tense spring, or add counterweights to the arm until the speed is where we like it. We all decided on the addition of weights to help the arm move more smoothly. There's a video of the test at this link!
-We started with a large base made of wood. Since the design is not exactly clear cut, we wanted to make sure it is a very, very, blank canvas that we can add and subtract from later. This allows us to make multiple different adjustments when necessary, without having to rework the entirety of the project several times.
-Soon after we came up with the basic mechanism of the project we started working on adding to the base with pulleys, ropes, and the PVC pipe arm that will be lifting the other, larger PVC pipe into the right position
