Log Entry #3 - Second Semester

2 - 23 - 19 | In college I intend to follow Nuclear Physics primarily, while also working on some minor degrees. I have been interested in Nuclear Physics and Engineering for a few years, and I want to work on fusion in the future. This means I will strive to start work in Nuclear power plants and experimental physics.

Ernest Rutherford was considered the father of Nuclear Physics, in 1898 he discovered the existence of Alpha and Beta particles with the help of Professor Thomas at Cambridge University. Rutherford was a professor that stayed at Cambridge to continue researching electromagnetic waves where he stumbled upon different radioactive particles. He graduated from the University of New Zealand with a Masters degree in 1893, majoring in both Mathematics and Physical Science. He did not need to go into an internship, for he went directly back to the university to teach as a professor, and later went to Cambridge to continue research on electromagnetic charges. Ernest Rutherford started in public school, but excelled in his classes and was given a University scholarship to continue his scholastic career. He is persevering, intelligent, adaptable, inventive and probably radioactive. I chose to research Ernest Rutherford because he was the original Nuclear Physicist, he paved the way for Nuclear Sciences and set the groundwork for what I hope to be my future career. I liked his career path because it was not straightforward. He needed to keep moving forward to achieve what he wanted, and he did.
